Its a GREEN Christmas!

It’s a GREEN Christmas this year! And I don’t mean the lack of Snow… (which is the case here!) BUT I mean it the time of year to THINK about dialing back our environmental impact during the Christmas Season. With so many of us buying gifts, decorating, partying, traveling and cooking dinners we need to find some “greener” ways to celebrate and enjoy the season!

GREEN Gift Ideas:

~Buy gifts of services such as Spa Services, Dance or Music Lessons, Childcare, Maid Services, Hair or Makeup Appointments.

~OR activities like Movie Passes, Museum Memberships, Ski or Snowboard passes, Dinner Certificates.

~Make something yourself – like cookies.

~By shopping in local shops that support local artists and local businesses you are not adding to greenhouse emissions and global warming. Local craft fairs and artisan shops are a good source for gifts that come without the added costs of transportation. Check out your town!

~Buy Recycled products and gift items. There are so many companies offering a variety of amazing products. (Check out Mat and Nat bags who uses recycled bottles to create their products.)

~RE GIFT! Just because you couldn’t use it, it didn’t fit or it wasnt your style dosn’t mean it wont be perfect for someone else.

~Try to re-use gift wrap and bags while wrapping your gifts, also use recycleable gift wrap whenever possible.

Green Decorating Ideas:

~ Buy a LIVE tree! They are a better choice than a plastic one! They are a renewable resource grown on tree farms, that are replanted regularly. They contribute to air quality while growing, and almost ninety percent are recycled into mulch. Live trees are usually locally grown and sold, saving both transportation costs and added air pollution. Live trees also smell like Christmas!

~Use LED lights. LED (Light Emitting Diode) holiday lights use up to 95% less energy than larger, traditional holiday bulbs and last up to 100,000 hours when used indoors.

~Turn off your lights when you go to bed!!

Solar Dying

I tried solar dying the other day and it worked GREAT! This is an wasy way to dye your fibres without having to keep watch of it on a stovetop. You literally jusy put aside and forget about it! Here are some instructions for those of you who might want to try it! (It works with both raw wool and yarn)

I used a few different mason jars – but any glass jar will do. It works best if you wet the wool/yarn first before putting it in the jar. Then add dyes, wool, HOT water, and vinegar in any way you like – I tried layering a few different ways and each time it came out differently. Really fun to It was awesome how there was different colours and varying depths. LOVELY!

I rinsed, spun in the salad spinner and left out to dry! Ready to become a wonderful skien of yarn!!!

The green and pink were done with with neon food colouring – the purple was with a fabric dye that I had laying around. Let me know if you try it!
